We Move of Down The coast passing thru Port Headland as we wanted to spend some time at Karratha (Pilbara) Do some necessary shopping.. like Food.. Get a Cold Slab,, and some wine for the lady of the house, check out some good fishing spots, unfortunately a Tinny (aluminium fishing boat) is always necessary,, so I will have to make do off the wharf or rocks if available.
Karratha is a Hamersley Iron town, built for the employees and expands as does the Mines that rail the ore into the sister town of Dampier, where it is shipped to all points of the world in Massive Iron Ore Tankers.
The town is well stocked for groceries etc,, a good place to shop. and Fishing is Great (If you have a boat) I have found evidence at the boat ramp, but when I arrived the tide had gone out over 3 miles all Mud this time, as you can see on Left, the filets were removed, and rest becomes crab food, and the cycle continues. However just one of these beauties would have fed us for three days or so. Grrr So we finished up at the local Chinese restaurant and had a meal of Seafood caught locally These Red Emperor were apparently caught 10 miles out on the reef, hence a boat is necessary, But I can be hopeful. Just one would do us for three meals :)
Dampier is the Main port consisting of Iron Ore Transport, but more importantly it is the base for Offshore Gas, the stuff we use in our cars - LPG - Roborne and Point Sampson are close by towns, mainly now fishing and Holiday villages so we had a look at the old ship wrecks, and old wharves etc with a few museums thrown in, was great to see what our forefathers had going for them, ideas and not much else to start with, but they won through after many trouble times including the depression,, the iron ore and the the off shore gas revived the towns and are now going forward at last
50 Mile beach is about 70k down to the south, and was a great day trip, as we unhitch the van and take of in the car, it was a lovely sunny day road was a bit rough as you turn of the highway and head to the coast, that's where it can be useful to have a 4x4 on those occasions,, next time I think we will have one,, not sure about a tinny though, will take a lot of taking the other half into that :)
It's great Great Coast line down there as below We finished of our week in the Karratha Area then headed for Exmouth Gulf 500 odd k's further South, the most Westerly Point of Australia
