Caravanning Australia
..Page Four..

Continuing Our Maiden Voyage around Australia ...

Tennant Creek

We arrived here at about 4pm, and booked into a Drive thru at the Caravan Park, as we we not planning to spend any time here, will call in on the way back, and were leaving early the next morning to move up to Daly Waters, 400 odd km

Daly Waters is a Must See town,, the Pub is the oldest in the Northern Territory, the Caravan Park is attached to the hotel, with a sign on the Park all "Angle Parking", when we booked in we asked about the angle parking in the CP, and were informed that you park your van 'Angle Parking'.. any bloody angle  :) which was so funny to see. That night we had dinner at the hotel BBQ, we chose Barramundi  and it was delicious, one of the best feed we had had so far.
The publican is also the local entertainer, and he told busk jokes and sung ballads while dinner was on. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all.
The hotel is unique in many ways and really has to be seen to be appreciated,

On the way into town is the Daly Water Airstrip. It was constructed initially about 1930 for the Daly Waters Airmail run. It later became a major staging point for interstate and international airlines. It was declared an RAAF station on 18 March 1942 when No: 56 Operational Base Unit, No: 1 Medical Receiving Station and No: 1 Repair and Salvage Unit formed. No: 56 Operational Base Unit moved out in the latter half of 1943 and No: 9 Stores Depot was the last to leave on 6 October 1944. It was used in 1989 as part of the military maneuver - Kangaroo '89.

The next morning we again headed North to Katherine. and booked in for 6 days there in a Big4 Park, joined in the 'Happy Hour' with fellow caravaners, met some great new friends, who we were to see along the road at many stops in the future. .. made plans for the next few Days .  Click Photo

We went out to the Katherine Gorge ; a beautiful place, went by punt up the gorge and climbed up to the next level (2nd Gorge) we we boarded another punt to truly see what the gorge had to offer.

Visited the Edith Falls the next day, another oasis in the desert. a beautiful swimming hole. for the kids and adults, as we all swam amongst the fish, including the Barramundi which were enormous, well over a metre in length and at least 40lb in weight

Found other tourist sports over the next few days,, and enjoyed Katherine immensely

We move out from here and set sail for Darwin the Northern Territory Capital City.
